About 50 students at Stanton Elementary School recently wrapped up their annual Summer Reading Program to maintain their learning skills when not in class. Title teacher Debbie Bickar said older students were encouraged to read chapter books while younger pupils read storybooks. They received a Scholastic Book of their choice as a result, but Bickar said the real reward is preventing the summer slide, or when students who do not consistently read during summer begin forgetting important words and skills they were taught. The annual program hopes to eliminate that issue and keep kids ready to learn when they return to the classroom.
