Busy March in Store at John Gregg

March is coming in like a lion at John Gregg Elementary School, which has a slew of events on the calendar during the first week.

Principal Tammy Burchfield said the school’s weekly Homework Huddle program is getting underway and community members are volunteering their time to assist students with completing homework, studying for tests and reviewing important basic skills. She added that the volunteers come equipped with experience, encouragement, patience and snacks. Homework Huddle is currently in its second year of implementation. Meanwhile, a Bible study program is being organized through Mount Zion Church. It is open to students in grades K-6 and provides youth with some Biblical principles that will help develop patience, kindness, gentleness and self-control. Both activities run each Wednesday from 4-5:15 p.m. at the school.

The school will be the subject of a special fundraising concert on March 2 as members of the Richmond United Methodist Church host the Raise the Roof for John Gregg Elementary event at 6:30 p.m. Plenty of music will be provided in the school gym from church singers, school students and the local Bluegrass group Awesome Possum. Free will donations will be accepted to help build an outdoor pavilion for student use.

March Madness Week ensues with parent luncheons and student showcases planned throughout the first week of the month. Luncheons will be offered for grades 3-6 and their families from noon to 12:45 p.m. with student showcases to be held for grades PreK-2 from 3-3:45 p.m. The third-grade luncheon and preschool student showcase are set for March 4; the fourth-grade luncheon and kindergarten student showcase on March 5; the fifth-grade luncheon and first-grade student showcase on March 7; and the sixth-grade parent luncheon and second-grade student showcase on March 8.

In addition, the school PTO will host its Spring Book Fair throughout the week and John Gregg will feature its annual art show and Math Family Night on March 7 from 6-7:30 p.m. A variety of fun math-based events will be available for the whole family in the gym and attendants can also peruse a series of original artwork created by the students in the art room.
