Tearin’ Up the Turf This Saturday at Edison

Music will fill the air this Saturday as Edison High School hosts the 16th Annual Tearin’ Up the Turf Band Show at the new Cartwright Memorial Field.

Eight bands from the tri-state area will perform starting at 7 p.m. and they include Edison, Indian Creek, Harrison Central, Toronto, Buckeye Trail and Oak Glen high schools with Thomas Jefferson High School from Pennsylvania and special guests from Malone University. The cost is $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and students with kids age five and under for free.

EHS Band Director Marc Sansone said this year’s festivities will be live, unlike the 2020 event which was virtual due to COVID, and it will be two hours of melodies and band harmony.

“It’s a festival, not a competition. It’s a fun evening of sharing music and we will have concessions, candygrams for your favorite band member and T-shirts,” Sansone commented. “It’s a nice night of camaraderie and we’re hoping to fill the stadium. The bands support each other because all of the programs are struggling [with COVID] and fighting through quarantines. This is meant to bring us together.”

Proceeds from the event will benefit the EHS band program, which uses funds for transportation, music and maintenance of supplies.

Meanwhile, Sansone is looking for past grads to take part in the EHS Alumni Band performance during the pregame of the Wildcats’ Homecoming matchup against Toronto on Sept. 24. The band will play the “Star-Spangled Banner,” “Alma Mater” and “Fight Song” and those interested should contact him via email to receive music and reserve any needed equipment. Practice will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 22 in the band room following the Homecoming parade. For more information, contact him at
