Intermurals Return At EHS

Intramural sports have made a return at Edison High School and students get a chance to take on their peers in a series of activities.

Health and physical education teacher Gina Fogle has undertaken the role as coordinator and said it has drawn junior and senior high students to get active and team up with other grades for some physical fun in the gym during lunch. Half of the students get to play while the rest have lunch, then they switch for the remainder of the period. Winning teams receive a trophy and their photos are shown on the school’s television screens.

“I was talking to [Principal Matt Morrison] and he said they used to do have intramurals, then he asked if I’d be interested in overseeing it,” Fogle said. “Physical education teacher Tom Bocek had done it and we’re starting it back up.”

Games began in early September, and so far students have enjoyed kickball and volleyball, plus other activities include cornhole, soccer, Pickleball, and basketball. Teams play each day at lunch and Fogle said the students have been very receptive.

“The kids love it and they are so competitive,” she added. “About 65 kids played kickball and the junior high and high school teams were filled. It’s to get the kids involved, especially high schoolers. They have fitness and weight training, but this gets them moving and creates school spirit.”

Meanwhile, Principal Morrison said EHS provided intramural sports for more than a decade and its return was well-received.

“It will get the kids moving and get out of lunch, while Gina Fogle has been very organized,” he said. “The kids are enjoying it.”
