A Message from Mrs. Burchfield

John Gregg Elementary is a great place to be! Why? We are respectful, we are responsible, we are safe…WE ARE EDISON!

The 2019-2020 school year was unprecedented. Although our school year came to an abrupt change due to COVID-19, our John Gregg staff and families joined forces to continue educating and providing care for our students. We continued to present our curriculum through an online program and provided instructional support through online conferences, videos, emails and phone calls. Through this time, our staff, families and community put aside their normal routines and reached outside their comfort zone to help students maintain their education, safety and health.  As we embark into a new school year, I guarantee that this same integrity, persistence and protection will continue.  The well-being of our students is our focus and will continue to be throughout the year.

Here is what we will continue to provide for our students:

–A 5-Star Preschool Program where our staff provides students and families above and beyond instructional support to ensure educational and social success.

— Early literacy initiatives that have gained statewide recognition. John Gregg has 16 teachers who have completed and now implement a professional development course of study called LETRS.  LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) accelerates teacher knowledge, which directly benefits the students they teach.  This program has provided our teachers strategies in delivering effective instruction to meet all their students’ needs.

–A full-time school counselor who works with our staff, families and outside agencies to provide for the social/emotional needs of our students. She is dedicated to developing plans in doing whatever it takes to create an environment suitable for our students to flourish.  Through the counseling program our building has monthly character-building themes that engage our student body and every class receives a character-building lesson on this theme. We also are blessed to have a career counselor in our building one day a week who provides monthly career lessons to all fifth and sixth graders at John Gregg.

–A variety of activities that include family and community members throughout the year, such as open house, parent lunches, student showcases, Early Literacy Night, Family Math Night, Veteran’s Day assembly, the annual art show, Christmas program and spring music concert. We also have an awesome PTO that volunteers hours of their time and this team of parents is responsible for organizing and/or funding the mum sale, fifth- and sixth-grade Halloween Dance, the Halloween and Christmas parties, busing for field trips, monthly popcorn sales, book fairs, Santa’s Workshop, Jump Rope for Heart, Relay for Life, food and toy drives, yearbook, and end-of-year celebrations.

At John Gregg, we continue to grow even prouder of our student body and feel blessed with the students and families we serve. Our school is full of active, engaged, caring students who show pride in our building, district and community. We look forward to another year of helping these students mold into successful contributors to our community.
