A Message from Mrs. Burchfield
I am very excited for the start of this year. There are a few phrases that the students are going to hear from our staff: John Gregg’s a great place to be; Taking care of business; and We are respectful – We are responsible – We are safe – We are Edison! We want our students to be successful and enjoy learning. We have a dedicated staff with an incredible community that are always ready to meet our students needs. It’s our mission for each student to be Prepared for Tomorrow!
Our 5-Star Pre-School Program is now being offered to 3- and 4-year old all day, Monday – Friday. This is an excellent start for our students becoming fluent readers.
We have received statewide recognition as a leader in early literacy initiatives. John Gregg has 16 teachers who have completed and now implement a professional development course of study called LETRS. LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) accelerates teacher knowledge, which directly benefits the students they teach. This program has provided our teachers strategies in delivering effective instruction to meet all their students’ needs.
We pride ourselves on the resources we provide our families. Our school counselor works with local agencies to help facilitate needed resources for our district families. She also helps monitor attendance and the social/emotional needs of our students in conjunction with The Village Network.
We always welcome our families and community to take part in a variety of activities throughout the year. Our Open House is a perfect opportunity to learn about the year’s expectations and meet teachers and staff. Parents and other family members can come and eat lunch with the students at our Parent Luncheons and view what their child has learned in class at our Student Showcases. We urge families to learn with their child at our Early Literacy and Family Math Nights. We also encourage our students to invite a veteran to breakfast and stay to be honored at our all-school Veteran’s Day Assembly. Our local churches have played a significant role in providing for the needs of our students. They have organized a Homework Huddle, Bible Study, Fundraising events and funded for lunch charges, clothing and school supplies. Some other events that feature the multiple talents of our students are our Annual Art Show, Christmas Program and Spring Music Concert.
We have an awesome PTO that volunteer hours of their time throughout the year. This team of parents are responsible for organizing and/or funding the Mum Sale, the 5th/6th grade Halloween Dance, the Halloween and Christmas Parties, busing for field trips, monthly popcorn sales, the Book Fairs, Santa’s Workshop, Jump Rope for Heart, Relay for Life, food and toy drives, the yearbook, and the end of the year celebration.
Each year produces amazing memories. I look forward to all of our future events!
