Family Literacy Resources

The Edison Local School District is a participant district in Ohio’s Early Literacy Pilot.  For the past three years, all teachers in grades Pre-K-3rd have gone through intensive professional learning on the science of reading utilizing LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling).  The teachers are providing explicit instructional practices based on the science of reading. With the school closure continuing for the remainder of the school year, the district would like to provide some tutorial videos to assist parents/caregivers with some strategies that are aligned with the science of reading.  These short videos will provide parents/caregivers with a short explanation of the strategy as well as modeling of what the strategy looks like in practice.

The Simple View of Reading

The Edison Local School District is deeply committed to delivering on the promise of equipping every child with the ability to read- and read well! We want every child to be successful in reading. We are learning more about what research says about how children learn to read and what to do when a child encounters difficulty when learning to read. The research that we continue to learn about and implement is called the Science of Reading. Through decades of research, it has been determined that reading occurs in a very specific way in the brain in all people. The Science of Reading has provided a great deal of information about how the brain develops as we learn to read. Edison Local is committed to be guided by scientific research to ensure that we deliver on the promise of equipping every child with the ability to read.

The Science of Reading is grounded in a theoretical model known as the Simple View of Reading. The Simple View of Reading demonstrates that reading comprehension can occur only when students have both word recognition skills and language comprehension skills. For reading comprehension to occur, children need to be able to pull the words off the page and have a good understanding of how our language works to comprehend what they read. As the district continues to provide instruction grounded in the Science of Reading, we invite you to click on the link below and view a powerful and informative video on the Simple View of Reading.

After viewing the video, please take a moment and fill out the Parent Literacy Survey.

As Dr. Loiusa Moats simply states, “Teaching Reading is Rocket Science” and we encourage our parents to be partners in ensuring that every child in the Edison Local School District learns to read- and read well!!
