Summer Learning Projects

Edison Local School District is looking to help our students continue learning and growing over the summer. We have a number of projects available for students to participate in for a wide variety of age ranges and interests. Students who participate in the program will be entered for a chance to win one of several gift cards valued at up to $100.

Below are the descriptions and resources for each project. Anyone who has any questions should first attempt to reach out to the corresponding projects’ contact, and if further assistance is still needed, you may reach out to the Edison Help Desk via email at helpdesk@edisonwildcats.org where your question will be directed to the appropriate party.

Grade Band:  All Parents

Brief Description:

Parents will be part of a GoogleClassroom that provides learning resources, ideas, tips, and an opportunity for parents to learn to maneuver GoogleClassroom tools.

Grade Band: 3 – 5 

Brief Description

Students will use their creativity to design Wildcat Water Park.  They plan rides, a concession stand, work with a supply budget, and even create some advertisements.

Grade Band: 3-5 

Brief Description:

This project has many options.  Students can complete a project where they plan their own Lemonade Stand. They will decide a charity that they would donate their profits to, plan their menu, set a budget, create a work schedule, and advertise their stand.  Any families wishing to extend this project are encouraged to read the book The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davis.  Materials will also be included to correspond with the book.

Grade Band:1-4

Brief Description:  Students will make a book from pages provided. They will have the option to pick and choose which information they would like to include in their time capsule. Book will be placed in a canister for later burial.

Grade Band:3-5

Brief Description: Student will roll dice and add or multiply the two numbers to determine which fun exercise they must complete.

Grade Band: Pre-K – 12 

Brief Description: All age levels are encouraged to participate in the rewarding and educational experience of preparing food together!  Choose food your family already enjoys and take photos of the recipe instructions along with the final dish(es) so others can comment and try themselves.  Find new recipes, make them, then rate them so our new cooking community can dig in, too!  The youngest members of the family can assist in the creation of a meal all the way up to high schoolers cooking on their own.  Create videos, photo collages, recipe cards, a food journal, anything you can think of to document your journey into the world of food!

Grade Band: 6-8

Brief Description

You will be given a set of challenges that are designed for you to explore and try new things as well as express yourself in fun, creative ways. These challenges tap into various interests such as music, art, science, puzzles, building, dancing, etc. Complete as many challenges as you can throughout the summer. As you work through and complete challenges, you are encouraged to document and share your progress and outcomes with Mrs. Schultz – who will also be sharing her progress as she works through some of the challenges.

Printout: Creative Challenges (Schultz) 2020 Summer

Grade Band: 6 – 8

Brief Description: Keep track of titles/authors of summer reading [student choice!] and choose to do any optional creative challenges offered as you wish.  Special recognition given to students who read 3+ novels and extra recognition given if you complete at least  5 optional creative challenges from the Reading BINGO board.

Grade Band: 6 – 8

Brief Description: Select creative writing prompts; pick and choose based on your interest and mood.  Special Acknowledgement will be given for those who complete 25 writing entries and those who complete 50 writing entries.  Writing opportunities for publication possible for fall.

Grade Band:  4-8

Brief Description: Want to see how your favorite apps and games are created? You will be introduced to the world of coding through the MIT program Scratch. In Scratch, you will be able to create stories, art, animations, and games that reflect your interests. Scratch introduces  coding by having you put together your own sequence of events. What will you create? 

Projects will be posted on Google Classroom. Coding work will be done through Scratch.  I will have a classroom in Scratch for you to submit your projects to. There will be Scratch log on information in Google Classroom.
